Start with the product you are buying
ADC12 appears in the Japanese die-casting alloy system. A useful distinction for procurement is the product form: the Japanese Standards Association lists JIS H 5302 for aluminium alloy die castings and JIS H 2118 for aluminium alloy ingots used in die casting. An enquiry for remelting ingots therefore needs the applicable ingot designation and specification, even when the buyer describes the requirement commercially as ADC12.
Ask the receiving foundry to approve the standard, edition, exact designation and any additional limits before comparing offers. Record whether a supplier proposes compliance with that standard or a separate customer chemistry. A familiar grade label should never substitute for this written agreement.
Review the complete chemistry
Yamaha Motor's published JIS reference lists ADC12 with silicon and copper among its specified constituents. That reference is useful orientation, but the purchase order should contain or reference the complete buyer-approved chemical requirements. Do not reduce the review to a silicon figure or an aluminium balance statement.
Build a comparison sheet with one row for every required element and columns for the contractual minimum, maximum, supplier commitment and reported result. Include agreed residual-element limits. Distinguish typical values from guaranteed acceptance limits: a supplier's historical average does not establish what every delivered lot must meet. Refer ambiguous or missing entries to the buyer's technical team.
Connect the test report to the delivered lot
Request a sample certificate during qualification and a shipment-specific report before release. Agree how heat or batch references will appear on the material, bundles, packing list and certificate. If the consignment contains several production lots, the documentation should identify which quantities belong to each report.
Specify sampling and analysis together. ASTM E716 addresses aluminium sampling and preparation for spark atomic emission analysis; ASTM E1251 addresses the analysis itself. These are potential references for a buyer-approved test plan, not automatic requirements for every order. Agree the applicable method, sampling responsibility, retained samples and the route for resolving disputed results before loading.
Qualify the supply against the foundry process
Ask the foundry to define what it needs beyond chemistry: ingot format, bundle handling, surface condition, identification and any agreed cleanliness checks. If the purchase is a new source or a changed specification, let the buyer set the trial quantity and evaluation criteria. Successful chemistry review alone should not be presented as approval of a finished casting's performance.
Keep the approved specification and source details under revision control. A change in producing facility, declared feedstock route or testing arrangement should be reviewed against the buyer's change-control requirements. Requalification requirements belong in the order or supply agreement rather than in assumptions exchanged after shipment.
- Approved ingot designation, standard edition and complete chemical limits.
- Required quantity, delivery schedule, destination and named delivery term.
- Bundle format, marking, lot identification and certificate requirements.
- Inspection scope, release authority and first-supply trial requirements.
Prepare a decision-ready enquiry
Send the approved specification with your RFQ and ask suppliers to identify every deviation explicitly. Compare quotations on the same weight basis, packing scope, inspection cost and delivery responsibilities. This gives procurement and the receiving foundry a common basis for approval.
