Define the decision you need to make
A buyer comparing ADC12 and AK5M2 may be evaluating a new source, a different specification or a proposed material substitution. These are different decisions. If the foundry already requires one grade, procurement should first source against that approved requirement. A supplier's alternative belongs in a documented engineering review before it enters the commercial comparison.
Neither a similar description nor a lower quotation demonstrates interchangeability. This guide offers a purchasing framework, not an equivalence declaration. The buyer's technical authority must approve the material, relevant standard and any trial requirements for the intended process and finished product.
Put both offers on an identified standards basis
ADC12 is listed in Yamaha Motor's JIS die-casting reference. JSA distinguishes the die-casting standard JIS H 5302 from JIS H 2118 for ingot supply. When an offer uses ADC12 as shorthand for remelting ingot, ask for the exact ingot designation and agreed chemistry. For an AK5M2 offer referencing GOST 1583-93, identify the applicable ingot or casting requirements; Rosstandart records both forms within that standard's scope.
Use the approved standards themselves for a technical comparison. A web cross-reference table can help locate terminology but cannot establish that all limits, notes and product requirements match. Record the edition and buyer-specific additions in both columns.
Compare every acceptance criterion
Create a matrix that starts with the receiving foundry's requirements. Enter each chemical minimum and maximum, then the supplier's contractual commitment and evidence. Keep nominal composition, typical production results and acceptance limits in separate fields. Ask the foundry to review any difference instead of deciding from a headline silicon or copper value.
Extend the matrix to product form, ingot size, lot identification, surface condition, sampling, analysis and documentation. Where the process needs additional quality controls, define the test and limit explicitly. A complete chemistry comparison is necessary but does not by itself establish that two materials will perform identically in production.
- Material identity: standard, edition, exact designation and product form.
- Acceptance: complete chemistry and other buyer-defined quality criteria.
- Evidence: report issuer, lot traceability, sampling and test methods.
- Approval: trial scope, decision owner and permitted supply conditions.
Separate source qualification from substitution approval
A new supplier offering the existing approved specification needs source qualification under the buyer's procedures. A different alloy or a changed limit also needs material-change approval. Keep these decisions separate in the records so a successful delivery is not later interpreted as permission to change the grade.
For any agreed trial, identify the trial lot and define the measurements the foundry will use. Record relevant production conditions, results and the resulting approval boundaries. If the buyer declines the alternative, retain the original requirement in the purchase order and request a compliant offer.
Finish with a like-for-like commercial comparison
Compare price only after technical deviations are visible. Align quantity, weight basis, packing, independent inspection, freight responsibilities, delivery point and payment terms. Include the buyer's estimated qualification effort when assessing a new source or specification, and label that estimate clearly rather than presenting it as a guaranteed saving.
