Define the intended process first
Silicon metal procurement should begin with the intended use and the buyer's technical specification. Elkem identifies metallurgical silicon as an alloying input for aluminium, with different products serving different requirements. That does not mean one commercial silicon grade is suitable for every aluminium operation or for other industrial uses.
Describe the target process, accepted raw-material form and required qualification route in the enquiry. If the request relates to chemical processing or a purity-sensitive application, identify those requirements explicitly. Avoid inferring semiconductor or solar suitability from a general silicon-metal offer. The receiving technical team must define and approve the required material.
Specify impurities as well as silicon content
A grade code or a single purity figure is not a complete purchase specification. Request an element-by-element schedule covering the silicon requirement and each controlled impurity. Elkem's metallurgical silicon data sheet illustrates that supplier product specifications distinguish chemical constituents and physical supply details. Use the offered supplier's approved data, not another producer's grade sheet, for acceptance.
Ask the buyer to set limits for iron, aluminium, calcium and any other elements relevant to the intended process. State whether silicon is measured directly or reported by difference under the agreed method. Keep maximum limits separate from typical values, and identify the reporting basis and units. Obtain written clarification whenever two supplier documents differ.
Make sizing and packing measurable
Specify the required size range and agreed allowances for material outside it. Define how sizing will be assessed, how the sample will represent the shipment and whether the result is reported on a mass basis. Ask for the actual offered form rather than assuming all material will have the appearance shown in a product photograph.
Confirm package type, package weight, lifting and unloading requirements, labelling and lot references. Request the current safety data sheet for the actual material and have the receiving site's responsible team review storage and handling. Agree any relevant moisture, fines or contamination criteria with that team instead of using an unsupported universal threshold.
Link qualification to representative evidence
During supplier review, request a sample certificate and confirm the laboratory, test methods and proposed sampling procedure. For the shipment, require results tied to its identified lots. Agree retained samples and a dispute process before delivery. Independent inspection can be arranged around the buyer's written scope where required.
For a new source, use a buyer-approved trial to assess the material in the intended operation. Record the source, lot, chemistry and sizing used, then let the technical team decide the approval boundaries. A passing sample is evidence about that sample; ongoing supply still needs the agreed lot controls and change notification.
- End use and approved chemical specification, including impurities.
- Size range, permitted fines and oversize, and measurement method.
- Quantity, packaging, destination and required delivery window.
- Sampling, analysis, safety data and trial-approval requirements.
Request a qualified commercial proposal
Compare quotations on identical chemistry, size, packing and delivery requirements. Ask suppliers to identify deviations and clarify whether test reports, inspection and any special packing are included. Confirm the proposed origin and producing facility for each offer rather than assuming continuing availability from an earlier discussion.
GLOBAL CZAR is expanding its international sourcing scope to include silicon metal. Share your technical requirement for a sourcing assessment. Available grades, source qualification, documentation and shipment terms must be confirmed for the proposed supply before an order is agreed.
